Taiwanese Noms in the Town That Flushes A Lot
Welcome back to this week’s #ShopLocalSaturday; where I highlight local eats and shops that I have visited. This week is featuring Legend Chicken in Flushing, Queens!
I’ve heard of this new place that has opened up in Flushing from a friend; who is one of the business owners of Legend Chicken, Bobby. I’ve gotten to know from a networking group for entrepreneurs that he is also a co-founder; Collude. I decided to check it out, since I’ve in the Flushing area at least once a week, and it’s on the way.
Locating the address in a small hole-in-the-wall spot; it turns out that this spot is being shared by three other stores, including the relocated Chinatown Ice Cream; now called Flushing Ice Cream. Walking past the bubble tea spot, is Legend Chicken. A small, unassuming storefront with an electronic menu showing what eats it serves.
I went for the chicken cutlet, and the shrimp roll from their menu. While I was waiting for my order to be ready, I was fortunate enough to speak with one of the other owners of Legend, and how it came to be. It was definitely an interesting story to hear about, while I was waiting. Most of the items are made-to-order; so don’t be surprised if it isn’t ready as quick as you would like to think.
I got my order to go, and as I took it with me; the smell from the bag, one can definitely tell it was made fresh, and very piping hot. I do advise that it’s best to eat it while it is still hot.
I had the shrimp rolls first; which I’m glad they gave skewers, to avoid getting my hands too dirty. Now, these were not the shrimp rolls that one would expect from a dim sum place, just deep fried. The shrimp rolls were fried, so it gave that crunchy skin, and it was slightly salted as well. On the inside was baby shrimp, surrounded by a fish texture; like if one were eating fish balls, from the street vendor carts.
Next, was the chicken cutlet; which was pretty huge to eat.
This cutlet was so huge; that just with a side of rice, and that is considered a meal by itself. It was a good thing that it was easy to separate the cutlet into 4 pieces that I can take my time eating in smaller bites and portions. The chicken itself was very crispy, and every bite I took was just very juicy and tasty. Not really sure how I got through it; but I managed to finish the chicken cutlet, in a more time than normal to eat a meal.
To end, I would recommend Legend Chicken. If anyone is looking for Taiwanese food that is served street-style; then head over to Legend Chicken. If you don’t mind the wait; there are some tables in the back, past the Flushing Ice Cream to wait for your order. I’m already thinking of what to get from Legend, the next time I’m there!
